Car Rentals, Taxi Information, Ferry Information

Make the most of your vacation! Explore the East side of the island and get around at your convenience to restaurants, shopping and Cozumel's fine beach areas. If you wish to rent a car at the Cozumel airport, Avis and Hertz have offices on the airport grounds. Just across from the airport are Thrifty and Smart rentals. Most of the US car rental companies are located on the island plus several local agencies. It is usually best to make your reservation well in advance. With most large US agencies, you can do this online on their web site. While Mopeds or scooters are fun, please excercise extreme caution and always drive defensively. When renting a vehicle, please use common sense, obey the local traffic laws, always wear your seatbelt and don't leave valuables unattended in the car.
International drivers licenses are not required.
Rent a car or jeep and explore the island!
Getting around by Taxis
Taxis are plentiful in Cozumel and rates are quite inexpensive. Rates are government controlled, but you should ask what the rate is before you get in. Taxis can carry a maximum of 5 passengers and rates vary for 1-5 people; there are some Suburban model taxis which can hold up to 8. Tips are appreciated. Phone 872-0236.

Most taxis are white. If you need a taxi, flag one down and you'll have one in no time. If the taxi you flag down has passengers, he will radio your location and the next available taxi will be stop and pick you up.

Taxi at the airport is slightly difference procedure. Before you exit the airport terminal, you can buy your ticket at the window and they will give you a ticket which you present to the next available airport taxi (these are Suburbans, so plenty of room for luggage).

Ferry Schedule
It is very easy to go from Cozumel to the mainland. An excellent and quite reliable, ferry service has been in place for a number of years. Ferry takes about 35 minutes to cross between Cozumel and Playa del Carmen; roundtrip tickets are about $20. Ferry service begins early in the morning (5 a.m.) and continues late into the evening. Schedule can change, please pick up a current schedule at the pier.

Take the ferry to Playa del Carmen and spend the day at the beach, or poking around the many shops. There are many, many restaurants. Or rent a car or take the bus to Tulum, Xel-Ha or Xcaret. It's easy to go on your own!
